Farm PhilosophyMOOR FARM was given its name by our family in 1977 when we acquired this small historic farm. It's name is an expansion of “grandpa's farm” in Swedish. The farm was originated by Joseph Palmer in 1729 and has been supporting families ever since. Our objective in this era is to continue and improve on sustainable methods of agriculture and to harness emerging technology in alternative sources of energy as petroleum derived fuels dwindle for dual reasons of short supply and effect on global warming. In this endeavor we have been farming organically for thirty years, using no manufactured fertilizer, no chemical insecticide nor herbicide. Seaweed/fish emulsion is used as a foliar spray. Our soil amendments consist of compost, wood ash, and cover crops. Our soil organic matter is up to 7%, and we have used no pesticide for the past three years. Trickle irrigation is the primary water source from a spring, and most is solar cell pumped and some is gravity fed from roof runoff via barrel. Hoop houses are used primarily to preempt and extend the exterior growing season, while growing tomatoes, peppers and eggplant during the warmer months. Emphasis is placed on finding agricultural systems capable of providing a viable and healthy lifestyle for young families willing to do the hard work required to accomplish this goal. Our view is to keep the scope of the operation within the management skills of a traditional family and to vertically integrate operations to retain the profit margins from seed to consumer. Our entire farm of about sixty acres is in permanent conservation easements in order to be available for future generations. |
