Alternative Energy

MOOR FARM is actively engaged in two parallel goals. To reduce methane and carbon dioxide emissions and the use of petroleum fuels and their derivatives to a minimum. We are seeking to address the global problems of climate change and peak oil while establishing energy independence as a farm entity.

Initial steps have been:

  1.  Installation of a 60 vacuum tube system to supply hot water for our radiant heating system and bathing.
  2.  Purchase of a plug-in farm truck for pick up and delivery (4000 miles driven in 2008).
  3.  Installation of a solar powered irrigation for one hoop house.
  4.  Use of barn roof for collection of rain water and trickle irrigation of hillside vegetable plots.
  5.  Purchase of an Allis Chalmers “G” cultivating tractor for conversion to battery power.
  6.  Exploring wind power for electric power to barn and hoop houses and aeration of pond.

Our only fertilizer and mineral additives are compost made on the farm and white wood ash from our own thermomass fireplace. Currently we are exploring the ancient technology of introducing charcoal as a supplement for doubling crop production from the same area. A grant proposal has been submitted for this purpose and to employ an assistant for this project. Charcoal production on the farm is planned and a prototype unit will be built in 2009.

We received recognition from THE CARBON COALITION for reducing CO2 more than 10,000 # in 2008.
